AI is software that's surprisingly good with words and ideas — it can write, summarise, explain, and brainstorm with you, almost like a very well-read assistant. The kind most people mean today is the chat kind: you type something, it answers. It doesn't truly “think” or know things the way a person does, but for a huge number of everyday tasks it feels remarkably close.
